Boilers hope to overthrow
IU tennis team

Coming off a tough loss to the LSU Tigers, the
Purdue women's tennis team is set to play Indiana at 10 a.m. Sunday.
Purdue sports a 3-11 record overall and is 0-3
in the Big Ten, while the Hoosiers are 10-6 overall and 1-2 in the Big
Ten. The match is scheduled to be played outdoors at the Purdue Varsity
Tennis Courts, but it will be moved indoors to the Lafayette Sports
Center at 9 a.m. if the weather is bad.
The women, who lost 5-2 on Wednesday to the 24th-ranked
Tigers, face another formidable opponent in IU.
"IU is probably one of the top three or four teams
in the league," coach Mat Iandolo said. "They are consistently among
the best teams in the Midwest."
In last year's match against the conference rival,
IU beat Purdue by a score of 5-2. Iandolo went on to say that the key
to this year's match will be which team gets the doubles point. Purdue
will be aided in doubles competition by the return of junior Lynsey
Fick, who was sidelined with an injury against LSU.
"In the last six years or so, we have had several
tough matches with IU, but we have only beaten them once," Iandolo said.
"Every single match is going to be a dogfight. Against LSU, I could
have told you what matches were going to be key; against IU they are
all important."
Purdue is led by seniors Lisa Walgenbach and Erika
Quebe, who teamed up for Purdue's lone doubles win against LSU. In singles,
Melissa Iqbal has been playing well of late.
With seven Big Ten matches remaining, plus another
versus Notre Dame, the IU match could be a catalyst that could send
the Boilers to the NCAA tournament.
Iandolo said, "If we beat (Indiana), our schedule
is set up where if we can win five out of our remaining eight matches,
we would have a chance at getting a bid for NCAA's."
