Basketball tops hockey in every wayI know this topic isn't up for any "Debate of the Year" awards, but how can anybody (like Joe Garcia) say that hockey is superior to basketball? Maybe growing up in Indiana has left me biased, but I would have to say that basketball makes hockey look like child's play. First of all, Mr. Garcia wants to know "what's up" with not having power plays in basketball. Hello? How hard is it to win when you have more people on your team? Basketball actually requires effort to score. Of course, the dunk, as Mr. Garcia points out, just requires leaping ability, and "anyone can just jump". But can anyone "just jump" to slam a basketball through a rim 10 feet high? I don't think so. Secondly, our hockey advocate claims that there is no physical contact in basketball. No physical contact in basketball? Could someone please direct me to where I can see one of these basketball games? I think I have been watching (and playing) something else. As for goaltending, I believe Mr. Garcia is referring to stopping the puck from entering the goal. The equivalent in basketball is called a "block" and is actually used quite frequently. There is no better way to make the opponent want to run and hide under a rock. Finally, I can't tell you how exciting it is to watch hockey players skate back and forth several billion times without scoring. I mean, the inflated scores and fast pace of basketball always put me to sleep. Every point in basketball is earned with sweat, skill, blood, and brains. They just happen to be earned 20 times more often than in hockey. I guess Joe Garcia has a point: hockey is more of a sport than basketball. That's because basketball isn't a sport; it's a way of life. Stevie Schraudner Junior, School of Science |
