Purdue women's tennis coach Mat Iandolo said he
hopes Sunday's 6-1 loss to Indiana was a wake-up call for the Boilers.
"It's fairly disappointing when you lose to your
in-state rival," said Iandolo. "I am hoping this will help to prepare
us for future Big Ten matches."
The Boilers (3-12, 0-4 Big Ten) fell behind early
after losing the doubles point to the Hoosiers.
At No. 1 doubles, the team of Missy Wright/Melissa
Woods lost to Indiana's Kelly Blanch/JJ Levin 8-6. Lisa Walgenbach/Erika
Quebe lost 8-2 at No. 2 doubles to Karie Schlukebir/Linda Tran. Lynsey
Fick/Melissa Igbal lost to Indiana's Amanda Field/Jennifer Hsia 8-1
at No. 3 doubles.
"They played a heck of a lot better doubles than
we did," said Iandolo. "We just didnt do a good job of finishing
points."
Gretchen Haynor said poor doubles play got them
off to a bad start.
"Not coming out and playing well in doubles really
hurt the team," said Haynor.
In singles play, Haynor was the only Boilermaker
to win, as she defeated Indiana's Levin 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
"I feel good about closing out my match, but it's
not the same feeling when the team loses," said Haynor.
At No. 1 singles, Quebe lost to Indiana's Blanch
6-1, 6-0.
At No. 2, Iqbal lost to Indiana's Field 6-4, 6-4.
The Boilers' Woods lost 6-4, 6-2 to Indiana's Tran
at No. 3.
Walgenbach lost to Indiana's Schlukebir 6-2, 6-2
at No. 5 singles.
Wright lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles to Indiana's
Martina Grimm.
Iandolo said the Boilers have started with the
toughest competition in the Big Ten at the beginning of their conference
schedule.
"(Indiana's) been one of the more dominant teams
in the league for several years," said Iandolo. "Right now we're 0-4
(in the Big Ten), but I feel like we've already played four of the five
best teams."
Haynor said the intensity level needs to be picked
up.
"We really need to come out a lot more motivated
and energized than we have been," she said.
Even though the Boilers have had a rough start
in conference play, Haynor is still optimistic about the rest of the
season.
"We are kind of in the building stage of our team,"
said Haynor. "We've been getting better, and hopefully the rest of the
season will bring us better luck than the first part of the season."
