With another year of Purdue basketball ending in disappointment, I saw the light. The NIT or little sisters of the poor invitational didnt cut the gravy. In fact, it surfaced our recruiting or lack there of. For years, Coach Keady has imitated David Copperfield, making magic out of mediocre talent. Update: the magic show is over. Sure, key injuries to Smith and Allison hampered Purdue's chance to finish fifth in the Big Ten, but did you actually think the Arizona fool's gold game of the year was a prelude to success? News brief: the Cats traveled from Hawaii to Indianapolis direct. Ever heard of jet lag? The problem: top talent in state goes elsewhere. Jason Gardner (Arizona), Bryce Drew (Valparaiso), Bonzi Wells (Ball State) and Michael Menser (Indiana State) to name a few. I won't even mention Jared Jeffries or Zach Randolph; oops, I just did. Hey, staff, did you even go after those kids? Pretty pathetic we can only sign two McDonald's All-American in 10 years too. So what's the solution? Coach Keady refuses to subscribe to Cage Scope or attend AAU tournaments, right? No, and quite sarcastic I know, but they just don't approach these kids right. Fans realize this; Purdue doesn't have one commitment from a top 100 high school senior (espn.go.com)? This shows "recruiting" has passed Purdue by. I'm not saying I have the solution but drop in on a couple JUCO games or tell the high school kid he's going to be the man for four years. Just get better (better athletes) or get use to it (losing)! Finally, don't tell me how young our team is. There's a saying, "either you can play or you can't." Happy recruiting, staff. Justin M. Paul |
