Editor's Note: We have reached our limit of 10 letters related to the Sunday night campus disturbances (aka riots). Students, police mishandle eveningFor three years, I've seen the stupidity bred here at this institution of higher learning. It's embarrassing when my parents have to call to see if I'm one of those stupids marching through the streets carrying burning couches. The Indianapolis news declared Purdue students go on their annual riot not for any particular reason. Apparently because we don't have enough to do on a Sunday night. How many of these so-called rioters actually attended a game this year? Certainly not the hundreds torching the recycling bins outside of our apartment. So for the three hours, my roommate and I have watched the most heinous display of moronic behavior, only to periodically rush out of the apartment with fire extinguishers in hand, watching ambulances carry tenants out on stretchers overcome by tear gas. We also watched a cop car rush through the development, only to quickly leave as the fires burned and people marched on. The fire department said they couldn't make it up here to extinguish anything on account of all the stupids milling about. Thirty minutes later, we still didn't see the cops or fire department come back. Instead a street sweeper slowly tooled through the wreckage ... still past the fires. To the students: Get a hobby. To the police: Learn a lesson and be prepared. Maybe it's just my roommate and myself, but does anyone else get the feeling the rest of the nation is not impressed? But then again, how could they be when they see us on the news saying, "Can't talk to the press. We have a riot to get to." Stefanie Johnston, Laura Johnson |
