action

Purdue University expelled one student Tuesday
and issued summons for eight others to appear for disciplinary hearings.
The expulsion and summons stem from the disturbances
that occurred following Purdue's loss to Notre Dame in the women's basketball
championship game.
"We want to send a message. This is not going to
be tolerated," said Jeanne Norberg, director of University News Service.
"This is not the way we do things at Purdue."
The expelled student is suspected of making an
explosive device commonly known as a Molotov cocktail. The student was
stopped before he could throw it. The student has the right to appeal
the expulsion
"I support the University's decision to expel the
one who was responsible for the explosive device," said Jim Vaca, student
body president.
"I do hope that the University punishes the rest
of the students that were involved. I hope they get more than just a
slap on the wrist. What they did was totally uncalled for," said Vaca.
The eight other students have been charged with
taking part in the activities and violations of the student code of
conduct. They will be subject to disciplinary action.
The names of the students have not been released.
Norberg said the University has not yet begun to
review the videotapes and photographs that were taken during the disturbance.
She said the Office of the Dean of Students will act quickly in reviewing
the photographs and videotapes and it will discipline any students who
are identified as taking part in the vandalism.
She said the police departments arranged the photography
and videotaping of the events.
It is estimated that 1,000 students were outside
during the disturbances, but only a few dozen are believed to have been
involved in the acts of vandalism. The cost of vandalism is estimated
to be more than $60,000 in damages to cars, trash bins, windows, a sports
shed and trees.
