Festival offers culturally diverse food, activities

A multicultural festival featuring a buffet full of international foods, a talent show and booths highlighting minority and ethnic student organizations will be held Friday.

The event will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. in the North Ballroom of the Union. This is the second year for the festival, which is organized by The Kitchen Table.

"We’re hoping for 200-plus (people); that’s about how many attended last year," said Roshaun Wiley, deputy secretary for The Kitchen Table and coordinator of the multicultural festival.

The goal of the festival is to raise student awareness of the different organizations on campus and promote diversity, said Tyrelle Collins, co-founder and president of The Kitchen Table.

"The Kitchen Table’s mission is to facilitate an environment of togetherness through education, entertainment and business," Collins said.

Frank Lin of the Asian American Student Association said his organization’s booth will display pictures of famous Asian Americans who have contributed to society in various ways.

"I think it's good to let people know who we are and also to see the other student organizations," said Lin.

Linda Phuong Quach, president of the Asian Interest Sorority Association, said she sees the multicultural festival as a way to raise interest for her organization and recruit new people.

"We’re a young organization on campus; it’s a good opportunity to get our name out there," said Phuong Quach.

The Black Student Union, I Love Taiwan Club, Turkish Student Organization, Indian Classical Music Association and Hong Kong Student Association, as well as the Diversity Resource Office and Office of Admissions, will also be sponsoring booths.

The Kendo Club and National Panhellenic Council of Purdue are scheduled to perform at the festival, along with some of the other organizations.

Each participating organization had the option to submit a recipe for the meal, said Wiley. Five or six recipes will be prepared for the buffet, which is being catered by the Union.

Admission to the event is free. Tickets for the buffet are $3 each.
