Revelry damages local businesses

SHATTERED: The Raven, a hair salon at 121 Northwestern Ave., was one of the businesses that was damaged by Sunday night's revelry. Ground Zero and Bar Barry Liquors, both located on Northwestern Avenue, suffered damages from Sunday night's revelry as well.

Purdue is reporting an estimated $60,000 in damage from Sunday night's crowds, and that number may increase as the week progresses.

Jeanne Norberg from University News Service said the University may continue to find damage to its property.

"This is an imperfect science," she said.

The estimate includes the cost of damage to windows, doors, a baseball equipment shed and fire damage to a University vehicle.

Norberg said the total cost for police personnel and equipment on Sunday night was $20,000.

However, she said she didn't know West Lafayette's damage estimate.

One business owner says the University should pay for part of the damage.

Natannya Williams, owner of The Raven, a hair salon located at 121 Northwestern Ave., says the University should at least pay the deductibles.

Williams received a call from the West Lafayette Police Department at 1:30 a.m. the night of the revelry, informing her that her business had been damaged.

"It's really sad and unfortunate," she said.

Williams said people can't look through the vinyl-lettered window anymore because there is particleboard where once there was glass. Business has slowed since the particleboard has been up, she said.

"My lettering is what draws attention this way," Williams said.

She hopes that replacement glass will be ready by Thursday and that the vinyl lettering will be done by Friday. She considers herself blessed to have insurance for the window because not all business owners do. She is concerned, however, about having to file future insurance complaints.

"I can't have this happening every year; I'd lose my insurance," she said.

Although Williams is disappointed by what happened, she says she doesn't blame all Purdue students for the actions of a few. The Raven had never been damaged before.
