Two local service offices of Tippecanoe County
will be combined, saving taxpayers money.
A bill concerning the Tippecanoe County board of
elections and the Tippecanoe County voter registration passed 49-0 on
Monday allowing the two to combine offices.
In a press release, Sen. Ron Alting, R-22nd, said,
"The two offices are so similar that they should have been combined
years ago."
The voter registration office updates voter registration
while the election board prepares ballots for Election Day.
"And of course, combining these two offices will
save money for taxpayers, as funding will no longer be needed to run
two offices," said Alting in the release.
Nora Jarmon, Democratic chairperson for Tippecanoe
County, said that by combining the two offices' resources, the county
would be pooling dollars to save money for taxpayers.
"We're both (election and voter registration boards)
happy with that because before, at election time, voter registration
was not working on the election," said Jarmon. "Now it will be able
to also work with the election board because we'll be cross trained."
Members of both the voter registration board and
the election board will be trained to perform the same tasks.
Currently the election board consists of two attorneys;
E. Kent Moore, a Democrat appointee; and Bob Reiling, a Republican appointee.
Terri Probasco, a Democrat, works on the board as well.
The voter registration board currently consists
of Nora Jarmon, Democratic Party chairperson, and Linda Phillips, a
Republican.
With the combination of the two boards, the whole
body will have equal representation by the major political parties.
After the county council votes on this issue, a
new person will be appointed to compensate for the current unequal political
party representation.
