PSG should rework referendumDoes the Purdue Student Government need to be reformed? Probably, most people would agree. Did the Internal Review Committee of PSG work long and hard on a proposal to improve the structure and function of PSG? Definitely yes. Was the Senate's decision questionable in not even considering the proposal? Probably yes. Was the committee's proposal for restructuring the representation of PSG from appointment to election, and from housing to academic schools the best option? I'm not so sure. I've heard some pretty good arguments either way, and I wonder if the best solution would be some kind of compromise, which could include both housing and academic schools in representation. Although they are very important, there is more to our University experience than academics. I also wonder if a better way to approach this reform (even if it takes longer) is to take the proposal back to the senators for them to look seriously at what the review committee proposed. Then we should work with them to either pass the proposal or alter it in a way that would best represent the student body and allow PSG to be more effective. If the referendum vote passes, it would be my guess that this would only indicate that students want a change in PSG, not necessarily because this is the best proposal for change. Although it may be exciting to see a governing body completely overhauled, it may be wiser to go about this change through the system. This means that everyone (senators, committee members and students who realize that we need to care about our government) would work to make the best reform possible in order to get our PSG into a position where it can represent all students and all aspects of campus life.
