Board of Trustees to review newly appointed candidates

Faculty to present ideas for future research projects

After Friday morning's Board of Trustees meeting Purdue should officially have a provost and a senior vice president for advancement.

Sally Frost Mason, the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas and a Purdue alumna, was appointed to the position of provost, and Murray Blackwelder, the vice president of external affairs at Iowa State University, was named the senior vice president for advancement. Both of these appointments need to be ratified at the meeting.

"The Board participated in the searches (for these candidates)," said President Martin Jischke. "I'm quite confident they will approve these appointments."

Along with the new vice president for advancement may come a new University building dedicated to advancement. "It's our intention to considerably expand our fund-raising activities," said Jischke.

He said this requires additional people and space so the University is seeking approval from the board for a resolution to get funds from the Purdue Research Foundation.

There will also be reports on some of the University's research projects including faculty presentations by the following: Gary Isom, the vice president for research and dean of the graduate school; James Cooper, a professor of electrical and computer engineering; Janet Smith, a professor of biological sciences; Janet Afary, associate professor of history and women's studies; and Eugene Spafford, a professor of computer sciences.

The University mission statement will also be discussed. Purdue does not have a clear mission statement right now but through strategic planning efforts one should be in place soon.
