Purdue offers rewards for
tips on vandalism

The University is offering monetary rewards for
information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the people
responsible for the vandalism of Sunday night.
Up to $5,000 is available for the information.
"(The amount is) going to vary according to the severity of the incident,
how many people turned in information on the situation and how good
the information was," said Jeanne Norberg, the director of the University
News Service.
President Martin Jischke said the reward offer
applies to property damage that occurred between 10 p.m. Sunday and
6 a.m. Monday in approximately a four-block radius of campus. The area
is bounded by Cherry Lane, Wood Street, McCormick Road and North Chauncey
Avenue.
Norberg said she was not sure if the names of those
who offer information would be kept anonymous or not. "You can't bring
charges (against someone) anonymously," she said. "But if (students)
provide information that helps us get the information on the record
that we do need, that would work also."
She offered the example that if a student gave
enough background so that the University could get the rest of the information,
that would qualify for some reward.
Norberg said she's not sure if a reward system
like this has ever been used at Purdue and she does not know what to
expect from it. She said she knows that most students are upset about
what happened and that many would like to support the University's efforts
to make sure it doesn't happen again.
"If (students) have good information, we hope they'll
come forward," she said. "We know they are out there and want to help."
Students with information should contact Purdue
Police chief Linda Stump at 494-8221. Information about the terms of
the reward can also be given at this number or can be found at www.adpc.purdue.edu/PhysFac/police/.
