Etiquette guidelines benefit societyMs. Elsner, I agree with just about everything you wrote in your Exponent letter on March 29. (Cell phones) can be annoying, but also very useful. On the annoying side, I have heard professor's phones go off during their class. However, making people stop using them between classes is not only unrealistic, but also unnecessary. If you get irritated by hearing about other people's lives, then not only should the cell conversations stop, but also the conversations between friends as they walk to where they are going. I would suggest trying to tune them out. I believe that people should just use common courtesy. If you are in a function where your call would disrupt the proceedings, then turn off the phone. Having said that, I believe that people on this campus only really care about what is going on in their own little world. For instance, so far this week, I almost ran over three people crossing the street against the light. I have stopped a running count this semester. When I let someone cross, they just take their sweet time. People need to cross with traffic, which includes not walking against the yellow light, at a rapid pace. That way, people get where they need to be and don't back up traffic. If I see someone carrying a heavy load, I will let him or her cross. These are guidelines, which I feel make sense. It allows all of us to safely get to where we need to be in the quickest time. I am not anywhere near perfect and have done some real bone-headed moves in my short life, but for the most part I follow what I have stated above. I appreciate you letting me ramble and express my views. Derek Knutsen Junior, School of Technology |
