Engineering Day events

The annual Women in Engineering Day for high school
juniors featuring speaker Jocelyn Wong of Proctor and Gamble will be
held Monday.
Approximately 125 high school students are expected
for the event, along with parents and teachers, said Carol Stwalley,
assistant director of the Women in Engineering program.
"An average of around 25 to 30 percent of
the women who attend the sessions come to Purdue," said Stwalley.
"This is a very important (recruitment) tool and also one of our
oldest."
Visiting juniors will attend interest sessions
and hear a welcome speech by Richard Schwartz, dean of the Schools of
Engineering. They will have the opportunity to talk with current engineering
students and women alumni who are working in engineering fields. Walking
tours of campus will be offered.
Stwalley said Women in Engineering Day is important
because it informs women about a profession that has traditionally attracted
men.
"Still there are problems in high schools
with guidance counselors and so forth encouraging women to be engineers,"
said Stwalley.
Stwalley said women considering engineering professions
are concerned about the types of jobs available. They want to be assured
that they will be helping and interacting with people, not just making
money, she said.
Women in Engineering Day informs prospective engineering
students about what careers in engineering are really like, said Stwalley.
