PSG damages its credibility with repealThey asked for your input, some of you gave it. They asked you to vote, some of you did. And now, those of you who got involved probably feel a little bit used. You shouldn't be shocked, however, because the Purdue Student Government has done it again let down the students. A little more than 3,500 votes were cast with regards to the PSG referendum to restructure the organization. Well, now that referendum has been repealed, meaning your votes were worthless. The members of PSG, and even some students, have debated the constitutionality of this referendum. Some people think the way the organization's Internal Review Committee gathered students' signatures was wrong. Others are mad because of the secrecy that surrounded the referendum before the elections. People also think that since so few students actually voted less than 10 percent of the student body the referendum is not a good representation of the campus' thoughts. PSG has gone too far and made itself look ridiculous. It's not a huge surprise that only a small portion of the student body voted in this year's election. Historically, the turnout has always been low, and the future will probably be just as dim. Why should anybody get involved in an organization that is so obviously unreliable? PSG had a chance to make a fresh start. Even though it was blown out of proportion, this referendum might have actually helped PSG by restructuring it and getting new people involved. Now, though, students may be confused, or better yet, completely indifferent. Those 3,522 students who voted for or against the referendum are probably frustrated, as well they should be. Six months ago, the nation came to a stand still because of a few hundred votes in Florida that weren't counted correctly. Well, now, right here on our own campus, Purdue students aren't being counted by the very organization that claims to represent them. Tell us PSG, why should we believe in you anymore, when you've made such a mockery of yourself? Editorial Board: Keith Thomas, Tom McHenry, Melissa Davis and Laura Pelner. |
