Basketball excites crowd with scoringThis is in response to Joe Garcia's March 27 "Ice Hockey Surpasses Basketball" Exponent letter. I've never heard such idiotic reasons for disliking a sport. His first idea for denouncing basketball is because there is no goaltending. It would be impossible to play basketball with goaltending. How much fun would games be if centers such as Shaq were allowed to swat every shot? There is blocking in basketball and it is comparable to net minding in hockey. His next pearl of wisdom was lack of physical contact. This doesn't make any sense. Guards have enough trouble shooting without being tackled by a power forward. Next he questions the point of dunking the ball. Although the move is flashy, it can be used to pump up your team if you're losing. Big dunks at key moments toward the end of a game can cause a huge momentum shift. He also states that is quite a bit harder to score in hockey than it is in basketball. This isn't necessarily true if you're shooting with someone's hand in your face. Maybe it would be easier to score in hockey if they reduced the goalie's pads. Only one person in NHL history has ever averaged more than two points per game: Mario Lemieux. Hockey will continue to get terrible ratings until it increases the scoring. Who wants to watch a game for three hours only to see it end in a 0 to 0 tie? Basketball games frequently end in shoot-outs until the buzzer. So if anything, the excessive scoring in basketball is a plus. So Mr. Garcia, I've got an idea for you. If you don't think games are action packed and sweated out until the end, check out the Final Four last week. And see what all the hoopla was about. Ryan Hartman |
