Boilers make Academic All-Big Ten team

MAYBE IT'S SOMETHING IN THE WATER: Purdue swimmer Melissa Bromley is one of 17 members of the women's swimming team who has been named a Big Ten academic all-conference selection.

Thirty-four Purdue student athletes from winter sports have been named to the Big Ten's academic all-conference team.

Two Boilermakers received special recognition for their academic success. Kelly Mackus of the swimming and diving team maintained the highest grade point average among Purdue athletes with a 3.92 in communication.

Katie Douglas, a senior on the women's basketball team, earned a reward for performing well on the court and in the classroom. Douglas was a first team All-America selection while carrying a 3.50 GPA in public relations.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, athletes must be letter winners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career GPA of 3.0 or better.

The women's swimming team had the most athletes on the academic all-conference list with 17.

Swimmers and divers who made the team were Jennifer Alden, a senior with a 3.55 GPA in health sciences; Heather Bachman, a sophomore with a 3.14 in health sciences; Karina Bolanos, a sophomore with a 3.55 in nutrition; Melissa Bromley, a senior with a 3.52 in secondary education; Lisa Dolansky, a sophomore with a 3.83 in pre-physical therapy; Sarah Dougall, a senior with a 3.31 in psychology; Carrie Dougherty, a sophomore with a 3.06 in sales and selling management; Patricia Finnerty, a sophomore with a 3.73 in management; Shannon Funk, a sophomore with a 3.03 in communication; Kara Hajek, a senior with a 3.38 in industrial engineering; Gynny Lakos, a senior with a 3.25 in interior design; Lindsay Lange, a sophomore with a 3.68 in communication; Molly MacFarlane, a junior with a 3.42 in movement and sport sciences;

Kathyrn Mullarkey, a junior with 3.61 in organizational leadership and supervision; Kim Paradeise, a sophomore with a 3.72 in civil engineering; Ronica Rogalski, a junior with a 3.08 in management; and Mackus.

The men's swimming and diving team had four athletes on the list — Donovan Crowley, a junior with a 3.14 in mechanical engineering; Javier Diaz, a junior with a 3.13 in economics; Matthew Garrison, a senior with a 3.38 in organizational leadership and supervision; and Guilherme Rego, a sophomore with a 3.53 in management.

The women's basketball team had five players on the list — Camille Cooper, a senior with a 3.78 in political science; Candi Crawford, a senior with a 3.43 in public relations; Kelly Komara, a junior with a 3.34 in physical education; Mo-nique Langston, a senior with a 3.30 in audiology/speech science; and Douglas.

Six wrestlers made the list — Jon Bush, a junior with a 3.50 in technology; Jon Fitch, a senior with a 3.25 in education; Kirk Moore, a junior who has a 3.80 GPA but is undecided; Paul Sacquitne, a sophomore with a 3.50 in engineering; Oscar Santiago, a junior with a 3.00 engineering; Jared Williams, a senior with a 3.17 in industrial engineering.

Carson Cunningham, a graduate student with a 3.60 GPA in history, was the lone men's basketball player on the list.
