Purdue team wins creative competition
By Mark Richmond Local police better have their riot gear ready, because members of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers have won the Rube Goldberg national championship. Purdue's Rube Goldberg machine won based upon its creativity and its ability to run without human intervention. The nine-man team also received the "People's Choice" trophy which is awarded by spectators who vote for their favorite machine. Eric Gossman, a senior in the School of Technology and team president said the team felt "an indescribable sense of accomplishment."
Bug Bowl gives people chance to face fears
Cricket spitting, cockroach racing, chocolate-covered grasshoppers, crickets and mealworm stir-fry were only a few of the attractions at this year's Bug Bowl. Each tent had a different theme, and it was hard to tell if the aromas around the food tents were from hamburgers and hotdogs or fried mealworms. It is no doubt that this weekend was definitely a buggy time for many families in Lafayette and West Lafayette. "These two days give families a chance to come out, see the Purdue campus, enjoy the weather and have fun while their kids learn," said Cassie Szczudlo a freshman in the School of Liberal Arts.
Web site adds photos to identify revelersPurdue police hoped they would get many responses to their Web site that shows images of students photographed or videotaped during the disturbance that followed the womens NCAA Championship basketball game. They have. The images posted on the Web site, www.police.purdue.edu, are an attempt to help identify the students involved in the disturbance that caused over $100,000 damage to campus and West Lafayette. The site originally had about 100 images when it was announced on Thursday, but was expanded to about 180 photos by Friday night. The photos show students wanted for many different activities, including starting fires, knocking over a mailbox and cheering from the crowd.
