Boilers extend winning streak
Taking advantage of windy conditions in Evanston,
Ill., the Purdue baseball team extended its winning streak to 10 games
with a four-game sweep of Northwestern this weekend.
The Boilers capped the series with a 10-3 win Sunday
afternoon.
One might have expected a low-scoring game after
the offensive display the teams put on during the second game of Saturday's
doubleheader.
Purdue won that slugfest 20-11 as the teams combined
for 39 hits and 31 runs. Purdue, which had a season-high 23 hits, was
down 3-0 after the first inning and 4-0 after the second.
Then the Boilermakers came back with two runs in
the top of the third with two outs in the inning. After hitting an RBI
double, Nick McIntyre scored on a David Harrell fly ball that got caught
in the wind and dropped for a single.
The Boilers totaled 18 runs in the fourth fifth
and sixth innings, going completely through the order in each inning.
Each player in the starting lineup doubled for
the Boilermakers, including John Gusich who had two.
Pitcher David Gassner picked up his third consecutive
win after starting his season 0-3. But Gassner wasn't the only Boiler
who picked up his third win of the year Saturday.
Chadd Blasko picked up his third victory of the
year and added a season-high seven strikeouts as Purdue won the first
game of the doubleheader 9-5.
McIntyre went 4-for-4, and, with his fourth hit
of the game, he picked up his 41st hit of the season. He hit 40 last
season. John Badylak, starting as the designated hitter for the first
time this season, hit a home run.
On Friday, Ben Quick pitched his second complete
game of the year, and the Boilermaker offense collected 11 hits in a
4-2 victory over the Wildcats.
Harrell scored on an error to give the Boilermakers
a 1-0 lead after one inning.
Quick struck out the first batter of the third
inning for his 50th strikeout of the season. Quick's pitch count was
only at 42 in the bottom of the fifth. After giving up his second hit
of the game back in the first inning, he went on to retire the next
12 in a row before Ken Padgett singled with two outs in the fifth inning.
Quick finished with nine innings pitched, giving
up seven hits and striking out six, giving him 54 total strikeouts on
the year nine short of tying his season total from last year.
