Exponent lacks international newsWhen my father asked me a few days ago what I thought of the situation that is occurring in China, I replied with the blank stare of idiocy. My father went on to describe the situation. My blank stare continued. Surely my father was joking. Had an international disaster like this occurred, I would have heard of it. But alas, I had not. I couldnt imagine why I didnt know until I had an epiphany. I realized I had not heard very much international news since I transferred to Purdue in January . But for some reason Purdue sports scores were burned into my memory, and Im not even a sports buff! How could this be? I looked though a few issues of the newspaper and realized the Exponent is usually set up as follows: six pages of campus news; one page of opinions, one page of games/horoscopes, about six pages of classified ads and six pages of sports. Oh wait. I left something out: zero pages of international news. I must have forgotten it because it is so small! This really upsets me. I am from Indianapolis where The Indianapolis Star, in all its glory, had several pages dedicated to world news, so I always knew what was going on. Now I dont, but thank God I know Purdues sports results. I am sorry, but I think China taking prisoners is a bit more important than sports coverage. Why dont I watch the news on TV? Any student knows as well as I do, once that horrid box is turned on, it cant be turned off. Not by you, not by your roommate. You are doomed to be distracted from your homework. I avoid that box like the plague. So please dedicate more time and space to world events! Victoria Fickle Freshman, School of Science |
