Roller hockey team falls
at national tournament
From Staff Reports
The Purdue roller hockey team fell short in its
bid for the Division I national championship this weekend.
"We had high hopes going into the tournament, but
I guess it wasn't our year," said Grant Baker, team president.
The fifth-seeded Boilers beat 12th-seeded Florida
5-3 in the first round Friday at Black Biscuit Rink in Los Angeles.
On Saturday the Boilers fell to fourth-seeded Cal
Poly SLO 3-2 in overtime after a long slapshot got tapped home by a
Cal Poly SLO player at Mach 1 Rink in Los Angeles.
"Unfortunately, things didn't turn out the way
we would've liked," Baker said. "We just didn't get the breaks."
In tournament play and in the round-robin play
prior to the bracket play, Purdue outshot its opponents. But the Boilers
lost first team All-Midwest Region defenseman Mark Sherman to a broken
arm in round-robin play. Forward Chris Wirtman got hurt in the Florida
game.
Cal Poly SLO, which had a first-round bye, lost
to Truman State 6-4 in two overtimes. Top-seeded Truman State lost to
second-seeded Lindenwood. Lindenwood, a small college in Missouri that
used to be an all-women school, fell 10-5 in the championship game to
Rochester, the fifth seed in the other bracket of the 24-team tournament.
