During his first year as Purdue president, if Martin Jischke ever wanted input on students' concerns one of the places he could turn to was the members of Iron Key.

"We discuss these things with him and we serve as a student filter of information," said Kurt Mathas, an Iron Key member. "We provide many different aspects of students and let him know overall what the students are thinking."

The members addressed such issues as safety inside Ross-Ade Stadium, the provost candidates and Monday evening exams.

Jim Vaca, an Iron Key member, said the members of Iron Key understand the viewpoints of both the University and the students on the issue of Monday evening exams, but they feel the exams will work better for the University.

"You've got to be open to all possibilities as Purdue becomes a better University," he said.

They are still in discussion about the disturbances on April 1. Vaca said students need to be educated about the implications of such events to make sure it does not happen again.

The members said they were pleased to see that Jischke is open to the concerns of the students.

The organization consists of 10 seniors who anonymously represent student concerns by discussing issues that pertain to students.

Amanda Teder, an Iron Key member, said the best way members can represent the students is to remain anonymous during their terms so students will feel free to discuss issues with them in an informal manner.

This year's members revealed themselves after picking the members for next year. The current members are Brian Buchanan, John Randall, Alicia Schulhof and Eric Steiner, seniors in the School of Agriculture; Mathas and Jessica Willis, seniors in the School of Liberal Arts; Steve Parker and Ericka Smiley, seniors in the School of Science; and Teder and Vaca, seniors in the School of Management.

Each year the Iron Key members also work on a class project. This year they designed a rope course. It is a training course that can be used by any student organization to teach teamwork skills. The course will be built somewhere on campus before the next semester begins.
