Grand Prix deserves more attentionI attended Purdue University from the fall of 1995 to the spring of 2000, and also raced in the Grand Prix of 1996-1999. The coverage by the local media of Grand Prix is nothing less than embarrassing. I have quite a history with Grand Prix, and it's more important to me than most. But for the campus to have such an authentic event take place, and then disregard coverage of the event, is disappointing. I remember in the early 1990s, the local papers would have articles during the entire month leading up to the race. It built enthusiasm and suspense. Now the Exponent does a "Grand Prix" issue the day before the race. That's not coverage; that's a race program. When I first began my involvement Grand Prix, it used to be argued "The Greatest Spectacle in College Racing" against the Indiana University Little 500. If you saw the coverage the Little 500 gets in Bloomington, you wouldn't argue much for us. If I were a business looking to throw some money around, I would clearly go to IU, where the coverage will leverage my business. These teams should get publicity; make them known around campus! They are putting a lot of time into this event. Some are taking it very seriously. They shouldn't have to win the race three times in a row or set the track record before their name is remembered.
