Sprint Corporation and the Women's Network of the National Conference of State Legislatures will award a scholarship this fall for graduate students pursuing careers in public policy.
The scholarship will be awarded to students entering graduate study for the first time this fall to study political science, public administration, public policy or a related field. Although the scholarship is available to both male and female students, those coordinating the scholarship hope it will attract women interested in public policy.
"Quite often women's groups that are associated with legislative process do things to try to interest young women in getting involved because they are underrepresented in national legislature," said State Rep. Sue Scholer, R-26th.
Scholer is a member of the Women's Network of the National Conference of State Legislature, which annually coordinates the giving of the scholarship with Sprint Corporation.
This is the ninth consecutive year that Sprint has coordinated the scholarship, and the corporation hopes it will attract individuals to careers related to lawmaking.
"We need to encourage students to go into the field (of public policy)," said Sheryl Wright, director of state government affairs for Sprint Corporation.
An amount of $2,500 will be awarded to four individuals who meet the requirements.
Recipients of the scholarship will be chosen based on factors such as scholastic achievements, written statements by the applicant, community involvement and letters of recommendation.
A committee built of representatives from both groups will select four winners from a collection of applicants from across the nation. Applications for the scholarship are available through Sprint's office at 1-800-796-3464 and are due no later than June 29.
"The Sprint and NCSL Women's Network graduate scholarship presents an outstanding financial opportunity for someone beginning the long haul of graduate study," said Scholer.
