Purdue names athletes of month

Sophomore Shaun Guice of the track and field team and senior Katie Douglas of the basketball team have earned honors as the Purdue athletes of the month for March.

Guice excelled in the high jump during the month of March. At the USA Indoor Championships in Atlanta on March 3, Guice jumped 7-3 3/4 for a third-place finish behind a 2000 Olympic team jumper. He also ran on the 1,600-meter relay team that ran a season-best time of 3:11.10 for a third-place finish.

At the NCAA Indoor Championships, Guice earned his third All-America honor and second indoors. He was runner-up with a mark of 7-5 for a new lifetime best and school record. Guice’s mark also ranks in the top five in the country and top 10 in the world. He is the youngest jumper on both lists.

Douglas led the Boilermakers to their third appearance in the Women’s NCAA Final Four. The native of Indianapolis averaged 19.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.5 steals per game in leading Purdue to Big Ten Tournament and NCAA tournament runner-up finishes.

During the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament, Douglas totaled 35 points, with 21 over LSU. She turned in a team-high 18 against No. 13 Texas Tech. Against No. 12 Xavier in the regional final, she recorded a game-high eight assists. She closed the month with 25 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two assists against No. 15 Southwest Missouri State. On the first day of April, in the national championship game against No. 2 Notre Dame, Douglas scored a team-high18 points and added seven rebounds and five assists.
