Hockey offers exciting experience

Mr. Stevie Schraudner (April 2 Exponent letter to the editor), yes you do have a bias toward basketball. I’m sorry, but your points explaining that basketball is superior to hockey seem very irrational. Let me state very clearly now that I do not care whether anyone prefers hockey or basketball. Honestly, I think both are very similar in that they are fast-paced and intense sports that require great skill and teamwork. Both sports also go "back and forth."

In hockey games, average scores are about two goals. In basketball, average scores are around 50-100 points, or roughly 25-50 goals. One would agree by score alone that it is harder to score in hockey. Please do not get me wrong — I did not say scoring in basketball does not require skill, however; the infrequency of hockey goals shows the difficulty, as well as the enthusiasm when one is scored. Think soccer. Just as you think it is boring to watch the back and forth action with no scoring, I think, "whoosh, there’s another basket, whoosh, there’s another."

As for your goaltending/blocking comparison, have you even seen a hockey game? Hockey’s blocking is called a check, and if you check in basketball, its called a foul, or charging. A goalie is possibly the toughest and most important part of the game and does not compare to a defensive block by an opponent.

I watch basketball and laugh at the exaggerated drama that occurs every time an opponent so much as brushes an elbow. Hockey thrives on physical contact, where as basketball has free throws every 30 seconds for fouls. Penalty shots in hockey occur maybe twice per season. Anyone but Shaq could stand still with no opponent and hit a free throw. A hockey game would never be perpetuated because of constant intentional fouls as part of a "strategy."
