Purdue needs new recreation centerI am writing this letter to the Exponent in the hopes of gathering student support for a new recreational center here on campus. Purdue's Recreational Sports Center was built back in 1957, making it the first of its kind in the nation. Since then, some four decades later, our facility has become one of the worst in the Big Ten and the nation. After visiting such recreational centers like those at Ohio University, Indiana University, DePaul University and University of Wisconson-Lacrosse, I realized how much our facility pales in comparison. In Indiana alone, Wabash College, Notre Dame University, Indiana University and Ball State University have all recently built new facilities for their students, faculty and staff. Each day some 5,000-6,000 students enter the Recreational Sports Center, making it one of the most utilized buildings on this campus. Those of us who use the Recreational Sports Center know that it is overcrowded and simply past its time. I urge students to sign a petition that will be started shortly to let the president of the University and Student Services know that we want and quite frankly, deserve a new rec center. We need a rec center that will improve the quality of life on the campus, replace our outdated facility and provide an area for recreational and social gatherings, something I am sure all Boilermakers would take great pride in.
