The Purdue Bass Fishing Club won the Old Minnow
Bucket Saturday on Lake Shafer with 20 pounds, one ounce of fish; Indiana
University caught seven pounds, eight ounces.
"I don't think that being on our own lake was a
big factor in winning," said Adam Wright, a freshman in the School of
Technology. "We were more prepared and we had more experience than IU."
Chris Laros said teamwork was the biggest factor
in the Boilers' overwhelming win. The members who warmed up for the
tourney by fishing on Lake Shafer Friday shared with the team where
and how they caught bass.
"Our anglers worked hard in a lot of aspects,"
said Cory Miller, a sophomore in the School of Management. "Everyone
on the team was very serious and passionate about doing well."
Josh Luttman, a junior in the School of Liberal
Arts, was recognized for catching a three-pound, six-ounce bass.
Wright was recognized for catching the most weight
in fish. He caught two fish, totaling four pounds, eight ounces.
"It was a beautiful day but the fishing wasn't
great," said Laros, a sophomore in the School of Agriculture. "The problem
was catching legal-sized fish."
Only 18 bass from the Boilers and Hoosiers were
weighed in.
"I was surprised more fish weren't caught for as
gorgeous of a day it was," Miller said.
Miller attributed the number of legal-sized bass
caught to the cold front brought in by the morning rain.
"It made the fish go eerie," he said.
The half-hour downpour wasn't the only snag that
Miller faced in the tournament.
His hook got caught on a tree limb. When he "gave
it a good pull," the rod snapped.
But the 10-pound-pressure line didn't break.
"That really upset me," Miller said. "I had to
take a five-minute breather before I could focus on fishing again."
Although he didn't catch any keepers, Miller was
happy after the tournament as he waved the broken rod like a wand saying,
"Look at my souvenir."
The team's souvenir, the Old Minnow Bucket trophy,
will be on display in front of the student organization office in Schleman
Hall soon.
