Purdue goes 1-1 over weekend

After a 5-2 loss to Ohio State on Friday, the men's tennis team thought it had to improve on its singles play. The Boilermakers did just that and it helped them to defeat Penn State 6-1 Saturday.

"I feel much better about our performance today," said Coach Tim Madden. "The fact that three of our players did better in their second set than their first proved they took the message to heart."

The Boilermakers (12-7, 4-4 Big Ten) swept doubles action with decisive wins at the No. 1-3 positions.

Singles action was near perfect with Andrew Wakefield, Derek Miller and Laith Al-Agba improving from their first to second set. Wakefield defeated Matt Frakes 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 3 position. Miller beat Todd Stecko 7-5, 6-2. And at No. 6, Al-Agba pulled off a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Brad Nudell.

At the No. 1 position, senior Jason Marshall, who played his last regular season match on the Varsity Tennis Courts, defeated Jamie Griesh 6-4, 7-6. Carl McCafferty also was victorious over Steven Westhuyzen at No. 4, 6-1, 6-4. Scott Mayer shut out Matt Nielsen in the first set, but lost the next two at the No. 2 position.

However, the team victory stopped a three-match losing streak for Purdue.

Madden said the Boilers' loss to Ohio State was easy to explain.

"We were simply out-competed," Madden said. "As a team we have found we can play tough teams close, but we just aren't finding a way to get the job done."

The Boilermakers started the match strong when they swept Ohio State in doubles action.

However, in singles play, Derek Miller was the lone Purdue player to pick up a win. He registered a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Derek DeFalco at No. 5.

"We are going to have to put together a stronger singles effort," Madden said. "We have to also focus on finishing what we start. We have to handle business in singles action."
