fountains, basketball
team

From fountains of praise to fountains of controversy,
University Senate used its last meeting of the semester to celebrate
Purdue's accomplishments and to discuss erecting fences around two of
Purdues fountains.
The senate formally congratulated members of Purdue's
women's basketball team for their successful season, which culminated
in the NCAA Basketball Championship game.
Robert Ringel, executive vice president for academic
affairs, was recognized for his role in the senate, as he has been an
active member for the last 27 years. Ringel is stepping down from his
position to return to teaching in the department of speech and audiology.
During the meeting, Ken Burns, executive vice president
and treasurer, took the opportunity to address questions about installing
fences around Purdues fountains.
"Our objective is to limit access to these
fountains, especially for small children," said Burns. "We
are not overreacting to an isolated event but finally responding to
a pattern of accidents that we should have addressed a long time ago."
Purdue President Martin Jischke began the meeting
by commenting on the States budget forecast, and how it will affect
Purdue.
"Theres serious talk in Indianapolis
of cutbacks that go even further than those already proposed in the
House and Senate bills," said Jischke.
Jischke also took the opportunity to express his
disappointment in the disturbance that took place after the April 1
NCAA Championship game. Jischke said four students have already been
expelled, two students suspended and about 10 additional students are
to be punished.
The University Senate also voted on nominees for
various standing committees. Over 20 vacancies were filled in the Educational
Policy, Faculty Affairs, Student Affairs, University Resource Policy,
Collective Bargaining and University Grade Appeals committees.
