Student leaders promote smart choices

By Kurt Esposito

Student leaders want to get the message out that students need to make wise choices.

On Monday, a group of student leaders from various student organizations initiated the "champions make choices" campaign.

The slogan for it is "Champions make choices, choices make champions."

"(It's) mostly in response to the mayhem that transpired after the women's championship game," said Brenda Shea, student body president-elect.

She said the slogan is designed to encourage students to make positive choices in all aspects of life, including celebrations.

Tiara Nibbs, member of the Athletic Affairs Committee, said, "I think it just reminds them that the things we do and the choices we make will affect us later."

Shea said it is no coincidence that the message was introduced the week prior to the Grand Prix race.

"We wanted to get the message out for students to take a stand, assert pride in their school and make responsible choices while they're having fun," she said.

Nibbs said the campaign is important because it shows that Purdue students, and not just the administration, condemn the revelries that occurred April 1.

The student leaders plan to expand on the campaign and continue it into the next school year during the football and basketball season.

Buttons and posters featuring the slogan will be distributed at various sites throughout campus during the week.

The buttons and posters will be handed out from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday on the Memorial Mall next to a live broadcast by WAZY radio, which is also helping promote the campaign.

Students seen walking through campus wearing the buttons will receive prizes that include T-shirts and football tickets.

Women's basketball player Kelly Komara is featured in a set of TV and radio ads promoting the message. Katie Pardo, president of the Panhellenic Council, said the student leaders would like to see more athletes take part in the ads in the future.
