Bad weather causes game's
cancellation
Junior David Harrell has earned honors as the Big
Ten co-player of the week for helping the Boilermakers to a 4-1 week.
The junior catcher knocked in the game-winning
run in two of this weekend's three wins over Penn State.
Harrell went 10-for-17 (.588) last week with six
runs and six RBIs as Purdue won three of four games against Penn State
to remain in first place in the Big Ten with an 11-3 conference record.
His on-base percentage was .682 for the week, while his slugging percentage
stood at .882.
He started his week by going 3-for-3 with an RBI
and four runs scored in a 10-3 win at Butler last Wednesday. He continued
his surge with a 2-for-4 performance in Fridays 7-3 win over Penn
State. He was 3-for-4 in the first game of Saturdays doubleheader
with two runs scored and three RBIs, all coming on a game-winning three-run
home run in the bottom of the ninth. He concluded the series going 2-for-4
with the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the ninth, a double off Penn
State relief pitcher Ken Damiano.
Harrell moved into the starting designated hitter
position six games into the season. He has started 18 games at catcher
this season, and Purdue has gone 14-4 during that span. He has started
13 games in the cleanup spot with the Boilermakers posting a 12-1 record
during that time.
Harrell is in his first year with the Boilermakers
after transferring from Danville Area Community College. A native of
Indianapolis, he was a standout at Roncalli High School, where he helped
lead the team to a city championship in 1998.
He is the first Boilermaker to achieve Big Ten
honors this season.
Harrell and the Boilermakers were scheduled
to play Notre Dame at 6 tonight in Coveleski Stadium in Notre Dame,
Ind. However, that game has been canceled because of the return of winter
in Indiana.
Purdue's game with Illinois State, scheduled for
3 p.m. Wednesday at Lambert Field, is still on.
