 Freedom results from responsibilityI am writing in response to the Exponent letter "Groups shouldn’t impose beliefs" from April 10. Either I missed Mr. Baumgartner’s point or he did. He says that you should not impose your idea of morality on other people and then goes on to tell others they can’t express themselves. I do not disagree with the basic principles put forth. In fact, I whole-heartedly agree. I fully believe we are all born equal and with the ability to choose, the agency to act for ourselves. Many people talk of their freedom, their agency to act as they choose and end the statement at that point. Freedom is not free. It is bought with the currency of responsibility and respect. You must take responsibility for your own actions. This is where the decision on birth control comes into play. If you have sex, pregnancy may follow. You must also respect the agency of others; allow them to act as their agency dictates. You cannot be free to write to the Exponent without ceding to another the ability to post a cross, burn a flag or simply sit back and do nothing at all. To state that you have the inherent right to express yourself, but another person does not, is not equality. The only way to secure your own agency is to respect another’s. I do not want to impose these beliefs on Mr. Baumgartner or on anyone else. I don’t want anybody to change their minds simply because I wrote a letter to the editor. I say, think about it for yourself; utilize your agency to examine the argument and decide what you believe and how you will act.
