Purdue prepares to face Redbirds

From Staff Reports

Although the baseball team no longer has the longest winning streak in the country, it still is one of the hottest teams, having won 14 of 15.

Today, Purdue (19-15) hosts Illinois State (16-16) at 3 p.m. at Lambert Field. The Boilers most recently took three of four from Penn State and ended their winning streak at 13 games. Illinois State, on the other hand, has won three in a row and four out of five. The Redbirds swept Southern Illinois in three weekend games, including 6-5 in 10 innings on Sunday.

Through Sunday's game, the Boilers have two hitters hitting over .400 — Nate Sickler at .405 and David Harrell, a Big Ten co-player of the week, at .402.

HEAD FIRST: Purdue second baseman David Blomberg prepares to make a catch and apply the tag against Penn State Friday. Blomberg and the Boilers take on Illinois State today at home.

Sickler hit for the cycle against Butler last Wednesday, going 5-for-5.

Purdue also has five more hitters above .300 — Daniel Underwood at .380, Nick McIntyre at .360, Dave Blomberg at .336, Michael Correll at .333 and John Gusich at .316.

With at least 20 innings of work, five Boiler pitchers have earned run averages of less than 5.0 — Matt Skripsky (1-1, 2.45 ERA), Dustin Glant (0-0, 3.86), Ben Quick (4-3, 4.00), Sean O'Neil (4-2, 4.14), Billy Lester (2-1, 4.43) and Chadd Blasko (4-3, 4.62).
