Grand Prix Day to feature different kinds of cars, music

Mini NASCAR, a battle of the bands and sumo wrestling will be some of the highlights of Grand Prix Day on Friday, an event designed to kick off the Grand Prix weekend.

The Purdue Memorial Mall will be awash with activity throughout most of the day. One attraction will be the annual Grand Prix Day, which is sponsored by the Purdue Grand Prix Foundation and will last from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Key organizer Ryan Delacroix said the purpose of the event is "for students to be out there, having fun while promoting the race."

On display will be some of the race karts that will participate in Saturday's race. "Somewhere between four and five of them will be there," said Delacroix.

Other attractions will be activities such as a "Moonwalk," an obstacle course where students will face off in an air-filled gauntlet and sumo wrestling. In addition, Ford Motor Company will display several of "its top-of-the-line cars," said Delacroix.

Along with the Grand Prix Foundation activities will be the 1/10 NASCAR racetrack, which is organized by the Campus Christian Fellowship. It is a small-scale racetrack with cars one-tenth the size of real NASCAR stock cars, and students can race against each other via radio control. This attraction will be on the Mall from 12 to 6 p.m.

Grand Prix Day events also include two free music presentations. The Purdue Jazz Organization is orchestrating "Jazz on the Hill," which occurs on alternating years and features live performances of all of Purdue's Jazz bands.

The chief organizer, Mo Trout, feels that it is a perfect opportunity for "people to come and sit on a picnic blanket, eat dinner, lounge out on the grass and listen to music."

The event will feature Purdue's three jazz bands — Concert Jazz, Lab Jazz and Purdue Jazz, and will feature an Alumni Jazz band of former Purdue jazz players.

The event begins at 5 p.m. on Slayter Hill and should be done at 8, said Trout.

Another music presentation occurring simultaneously is the Purdue Student Union Board Grand Slam Battle of the Bands. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. on the Memorial Union lawn near the reflection pool on State Street. The entertainment includes five different bands playing music "ranging from metal, to ska, to heavy, to light rock," said organizer Matt Magurany.

The bands consist of Adrenaline, Free Raine, None The Less, No Reason Given and 3rd Estate. Each will play for about 45 minutes.

Students can buy food from the Sweet Shop booth, and can "snag some coupons and random things," that will be given out at the event, said Magurany.

The events on Friday will set the mood for the weekend and students can access the Grand Prix Web site at www.purduegrandprix.org for information on events and activities.
