Overruling shows inadequacy of PSGPurdue Student Government has proved how completely ineffective an organization it is. At Wednesday night's PSG meeting, the Office of the Dean of Students and the Student Court overruled the decision to repeal the referendum to restructure PSG, meaning the referendum is in place. Certain PSG senators, however, disagreed and said these rulings have no bearing and that no real changes occurred. This shows a complete lack of communication and organization within PSG. It shows the senators are incapable of handling themselves, have no idea what their own rules are or what those rules mean, and it proves PSG needs help to accomplish any task. As the Purdue Student Government, one would think PSG's primary goal would be to serve the student community. However, two weeks ago the organization voted to rescind the student body's votes, essentially making its constituents wishes seem worthless. To some students, this came as a surprise because the opinions they expressed were ignored. However, to others it was no surprise at all, just another incident of PSG disappointing the student body. Wednesday night's incidents do they same; they prove that PSG has no idea how to serve Purdue students. Apparently, some PSG senators were shocked and angered that the Office of the Dean of Students would overrule the organization's actions, but really it's a welcome change. For far too long PSG has been conducting itself in a ridiculous manner. Hopefully, this will change soon; the new referendum may help do that. With a new structure, PSG has a chance to start over. There will be new senators, new leaders and new ideas. Hopefully, this will make for a more effective government. To PSG's future senators remember we, the student body, do not want to be disappointed and fooled again; we don't have the patience. To this year's senators have a nice break from student government and be happy when you reflect on this semester. There has been more discussion about this PSG referendum than there has been about any other PSG business in the last few years. For once, students took notice of your organization. If they remember it fondly, however, is a different question. Editorial Board: Tom McHenry, Keith Thomas, Melissa Davis and Laura Pelner. |
