Chalkings promote events, diversity

As president of Purdue Equality Alliance, the group behind the "Gaypril" chalkings, I would like to respond to Rhett Steele's letter. The chalkings were a media ploy to draw attention to events that we had planned. Events that specifically target the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, and allied population of the Purdue community. You may not like the chalkings, and no one can force you to. That is not the organization’s purpose, and is not what we want to do. However, we try to conduct events in which people can be free to express themselves without fear of social backlash. Creating an inclusive, accepting campus, in my opinion, does not make the campus look disgraceful. Quite the contrary, I think it shows the diverseness of the community in which we live. I am sorry that you could not see the humor behind the flyers and chalkings. If you have further legitimate questions about "Gaypril" events or about the organization, please feel free to email me.
