Purdue University announced Thursday that four
more students are expelled from school, bringing the total up to six
expulsions in relation to the April 1 disturbance following the women's
NCAA championship basketball game.
Jeanne Norberg, director of the University News
Service, said to date Purdue has expelled six students and suspended
two, and there are still cases pending. According to a news release,
10 more students have been called in for hearings related to serious
charges in response to the April 1 melee.
In the release, Stephen Akers, executive associate
Dean of Students, said the 10 pending cases should be completed within
the next week and more may follow after some preliminary investigations
are concluded.
Norberg said all of the cases have been serious.
"I think when we started out we didnt know exactly what evidence
we would have; we knew we were going to take serious action, and that's
what we've done."
In the 15 years Norberg has been at Purdue, she
said she's never been aware of so many disciplinary actions related
to one event. "There certainly was a determined effort to leave no stone
unturned," she said.
Norberg said nobody really wants to expel students,
including the Dean of Students Office. However, she did say that if
people are doing negative activity on campus, they do not belong here.
"We definitely feel everyone who is performing these actions does not
belong at Purdue," Norberg said.
According to the news release, police report that
five students and two non-students have been arrested to date in relation
to the April 1 incident. The Tippecanoe County prosecutor is expected
to charge more than a dozen others.
Steven Dietrich, captain of investigations for
Purdue police, said in the release that police have identified 56 people
from videotapes of the disturbance.
He said that of the 158 images posted on the Purdue
police Web site only five remain unidentified.
The April 1 disturbance caused more than $75,000
in damage in and around campus to vehicles, windows, a shed, trash containers
and trees.
