Despite their recent differences, members of Purdue Student Government came together to put on a barbecue for the students Sunday afternoon.

The inaugural 2001 PSG Backyard Barbecue offered free food and entertainment for Purdue students on a sunny afternoon.

"We could not have asked for a more beautiful day," said Michelle Cook, student body treasurer.

The members of PSG relaxed by serving free hot dogs to students, bathing in a kiddie pool and playing volleyball.

Only a few students showed up initially, but more strolled in to hear bands such as The Slizzard Kings, Andrew Hail, Tub Ring, Josh Holmes Band and Plain Jane as the day went on.

The bands offered a variety of music styles ranging from original tunes to a cover of Britney Spears' "Hit Me, Baby One More Time."

Between performances, master of ceremonies Brian Coogan entertained the crowd with intentionally bad jokes and was the victim of a few pies in the face.

During the performances, he sat in the kiddie pool next to stage, wearing a bathing suit and water wings. He and the bands threw numbered tennis balls at the crowd. The students swarmed for the tennis balls, which could be turned in for prizes.

Students also had the chance to win a DVD player by performing a stupid human trick.

One student drank a bottle of water through his nose and another secured a condom around his head and blew it up until it popped.

When the students were not standing up and cheering for the bands, they were relaxing and sunbathing on the lawn in front of the stage. Two concert-goers even brought a futon to sit on.

"It’s just nice to be outside and spend time with friends," said Audrea Bailey, a freshman in the School of Veterinary Medicine.
