Tennis team wins one, loses one to Michigan

Purdue sweeps doubles matches

After beating Michigan State 6-1 on Saturday, the men’s tennis team was defeated 4-3 Sunday at Michigan.

"All year we have played truly solid doubles matches and failed to get the job done in singles," Purdue coach Tim Madden said. "Today was no exception. We don’t compete well when the pressure is on in singles and that is why we lost today."

Purdue swept the doubles portion of play with wins at the No. 1-3 positions. In singles action, Andrew Wakefield defeated Danny McCain 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 3 position. At No. 4, Carl McCafferty claimed a decisive 6-0, 6-1 victory over Anthony Jackson. At No. 1 singles, Jason Marshall fell to Henry Beam 6-1, 7-6. At No. 2 singles, Scott Mayer fell to Ben Cox, 7-6, 1-6, 6-2. At No. 5 singles, Michigan's Greg Novak defeated Purdue's Derek Miller 6-2, 6-7, 7-5. At No. 6 singles, Wolverine Chris Shaya defeated Boiler Laith Al-Agba 6-2, 6-2.

The men’s tennis team decisively defeated Michigan State 6-1 Saturday in East Lansing.

"(Saturday) we really needed to play with confidence throughout the lineup," Madden said. "We definitely accomplished that."

The Boilermakers swept doubles action with wins at all three positions.

In singles action, Marshall led the way with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Eric Simonton at the No. 1 position. Mayer picked up a win at No. 2 over Goran Topalo. A switch in the lineup at No. 3 and No. 4 proved to be successful with both Wakefield and McCafferty winning respective matches. Wakefield defeated Adam Hourani 6-4, 6-4. McCafferty defeated Jimmy McGuire, 6-4, 6-4. At No. 6 singles Al-Agba fell to Mike Hodge, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. Miller rounded out the day with a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 5 over Mike Jonckheere.

Purdue will await its fate for the Big Ten Championships, which begin on Thursday in Madison, Wisc.
