Wetzel leaves Purdue to get closer to home

Sophomore Adam Wetzel will transfer to another school for his junior and senior seasons in an attempt to get closer to his home in Keokuk, Iowa, according to Purdue men's basketball coach Gene Keady.

Wetzel, a 6-foot-9 forward/center from Keokuk High School, played in a total of 44 games during the last two seasons — 25 as a freshman and 19 as a sophomore, starting four times last season in the absence of injured center John Allison.

Wetzel, who was academically ineligible for games played last fall, averaged 13.5 minutes per game in the 19 games in which he played this season.

His career totals are 102 points (2.3 average), 99 rebounds (2.3 average) and 25 blocked shots in 384 minutes (8.7 average). Wetzel made 37 of 79 field goal attempts (46.8 percent) and 28 of 53 free throws (52.8 percent).

Wetzel, who will finish the semester at Purdue, is the second Boiler to leave Purdue this offseason. Earlier this month, Travis Best, a junior guard who transferred to Purdue from Louisville, announced that he wants more playing time his senior year so he is transferring to Marian College, a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics school in Indianapolis. He saw action in 19 of Purdue's 32 games last season and played a total of 84 minutes with a total of 14 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists.
