'Survivor' themed show to satirize Krannert life

With songs and comedy, members of the Krannert Entertainment and Sports Industries Club will present a parody of life in the School of Management at 6 p.m. Friday in Fowler Hall.

The idea to produce a parody of a graduate student's life at Krannert was conceived last year by Richard Rauschmeier, then a graduate student. Willie Morris, club president, said, "The show was inspired by similar parodies, such as the Harvard Business Show. It was an injustice that Purdue didn’t have one. The professors and students loved it, so we want to keep it as our tradition."

The theme of this year's show is the TV show "Survivor," which ties all of the varied skits together. "There's singing, acting and dancing," Morris said. "We've rewritten the lyrics to some songs so they have to do with Krannert."

Mary Weinke, the club's president-elect, has written parts of the show this semester and is acting in the production. A self-proclaimed "Survivor" junkie, she said, "When I joined the production, the skits were mostly finished. But even though the theme was 'Survivor,' there weren't any 'Survivor' skits. So I said, 'Let me write up some stuff for you.'"

Now the parody features Krannert versions of such "Survivor" staples as the reward challenge and the show's introduction, explaining how a group of students were stranded at Krannert for two years. "We tried to do something with kicking people out at tribal council, but then we realized that people don't get kicked out of Krannert," Weinke said.

She also designed the show's logo, which features the slogan "Out-quant, Out-strat, Out-M.S.M., In-M.B.A.," a parody of the "Survivor" slogan "Outwit, Outplay, Outlast." The terms "Out-M.S.M., In-M.B.A." in the parody's logo recognize the recent change of a Krannert graduate degree from a master of science in management to a master of business Administration degree, Weinke said.

Approximately 11 students appear in the parody, and four others were involved with writing and other behind-the-scenes work. "We want to encourage the first-year students to come to the show so we can keep the tradition going," Morris said.

Tickets to the Krannert "Survivor" parody are $5 and are available from any cast member in the lobby of Krannert from 9:30 to 9:50 a.m. today through Thursday. They are also available at the door.
