Councilman should listen to studentsThis past week West Lafayette City Council voted for the first time on a very important ordinance that will undoubtedly affect students by raising rent prices. Councilman Brad Windler voted in favor of this ordinance and continued his streak of playing politics and not representing the students of his district. Mr. Windler is a politician and does not represent the students. Mr. Windler continually insists that he is the students' voice on the City Council. He has told students that he will convey the thoughts and feelings of students during City Council meetings, yet on April 9 he did not. He knew about Purdue students' strong opposition to the new proposed ordinance and said nothing during the council meeting that could be remotely attributed to speaking up for the students. Mr. Windler then voted in favor of the ordinance for its first reading. Five Democrats voted for it, two Republicans against it. Mr. Windler caved to the power and influence of the local neighborhood associations and ignored students voices. Two members of the council heard the students voices. Mrs. Barbara Sparby and Mr. Gerry Keen. Students should applaud these two council members for considering students in their decision and not politics. I know people will say that Mrs. Sparby and Mr. Keen also voted along party lines. I disagree and say that these two council members listened to the members of the city and looked at the proposal objectively and came to the conclusion that the proposal is unfair. I hope students will take time and e-mail or call Mr. Windler and voice your opposition to this proposed ordinance and also ask Mr. Windler to represent the students, after all, it is the students that put him in office.
