Students graduating with a master's degree from
the Krannert School of Management can now receive a master's of business
administration.
Previously, master's degree students graduating
from the school's two-year graduate program could only receive a master's
of science in management.
The school was one of only a few top-25 business
schools that did not have an MBA designation.
"It is really just to come in line with what everybody
else does since our program is the same as every other MBA program,"
said Gerald Lynch, associate professor of economics and associate dean
for programs and student services in the school.
In February, Purdue's Board of Trustees approved
the proposal for the new designation. It was made official by the Indiana
Commission for Higher Education in March.
Students enrolled in the program can decide if
they want an MBA or a master's of science in management when they graduate
either this year or next year. All students who enter the program in
the fall and later will be awarded MBA degrees.
Amy Donahy, a graduate student in the School of
Management and first year student in the program, said she will switch
to the MBA designation when she graduates next year.
"Just because (MBA) is the more recognizable degree
title when companies come to recruit. We would have to explain before
that (master's of science in management) was the same as an MBA, it
just happened to be a different title," she said.
Lynch said the change will not affect any of the
core or elective classes.
Several of the school's executive education programs
will also switch to the MBA designation. The full-time master's of science
in industrial administration, a one-year program, will not make the
change.
