Software company opens headquarters in Purdue Research Park

Seeking to capitalize on integrating the manufacturing and engineering operations of a company more efficiently is what a high-tech start-up company in the Purdue Research Park is looking to do.

"What if your manufacturing organization could communicate efficiently and painlessly with engineering – in the early stages of product development – to significantly reduce the total time and cost required to design and deliver new products?" said Julie Goonewardene, president of Cantilever Technologies.

With a staff of 14 working feverishly on developing their software product, called the "Readiness Engine," they hope to have it commercially available by mid-2001.

"It’s currently being tested," said Goonewardene.

The Readiness Engine organizes data from independent design and supply chain systems into a shared information base to improve the flow of a product through the design, engineering and manufacturing operations.

Goonewardene said that she and her husband came up with the idea after spending many years installing computer systems into manufacturing companies.

Funded by the Parson Group, a venture capital firm located in Chicago, Cantilever Technologies was founded in November 1999 and selected the Purdue Research Park as their headquarters.

"My husband and I were living in Chicago. I graduated from Purdue, my father is a professor at Purdue, and I was very impressed with Purdue and the Research Park in terms of helping companies start," said Goonewardene.

She also said the facilities are terrific and having access to Purdue’s faculty and talent pool has been great.

"We like people that have both computer science and engineering degrees," said Goonewardene.

Cantilever expects to grow to more than 40 employees by the end of 2001 and might be hiring summer interns. Goonewardene says that Jason Kilkus, director of operations, is in charge of hiring.
