Opinions

Zoning rules should be abolished

I am writing to object to the R-1 zoning classification that is so prevalent in the West Lafayette area. This classification states that no more than three non-related people can live in the same dwelling. I think the mere presence of this classification in a college town is absolutely ridiculous. I think the city council should vote to remove any R-1 zones from the area. The supposed reason for the existence of these zones is that the areas are primarily family dwellings. If any family decided to rent these properties so close to a college campus, I would recommend a psychiatric evaluation for them. If you live in West Lafayette, you're going to have to put up with college students.

I found it hilarious that in an article on this same topic in the Exponent on April 12, Mr. Brad Windler stated that a significant increase in noise, trash, and cars occurs when a house has four unrelated people instead of three. How can one person make that much difference in these problems? It is ludicrous to think that the fourth person can do all this. Even if this were true, what difference does it make if the people are related or not? Related people do not generate less trash together.

In closing, there is no reason that the West Lafayette area should even have a zoning classification like R-1.
