Students should behave intelligentlyThe only thing worse than a dumb liberal is an intelligent one. Likewise, the only thing worse than a smart conservative is an ignorant one. Our problem is that this campus is flooded with idiots on both sides of the administration line, so the reactionary conservatives have the upper hand. No wonder our taste in music has gotten so bad. Don't blame the University for fencing off the fountains; the people responsible for this just know exactly how easy it is to get us under their thumbs. The Soviets and the Nazis are the only other organizations I can think of that exercised more power over their minions than Purdue has on us, not just because they were powerful, but because the people under them were willfully ignorant. Purdue is putting up these fences not just to protect us from ourselves but because it CAN. Are we going to stage an organized protest and keep these gates down? Not if present trends continue and we do enough damage to local businesses and start enough couch fires to get the local Gestapo unit out to hound down offenders (and we all know what happened last time). Go ahead and blame the University for pampering us, but if you want to be taken seriously then start behaving at least a few notches above that of a dumb beast. I don't know who's to blame for this mess at least in the '60s you could blame the "outside agitators" and LBJ, but George W. hasn't gotten us into a war yet, and there's still enough cell phones on campus to disprove the idea of a recession, so stop blaming Big Brother. There are better ways to make those in charge shake and quiver in terror than e-mails, petitions and aggression intelligence comes to mind. Scott Borchert Senior, Schools of Engineering |
