Weekend behavior impresses dean

It seems you get contacted quickly when things go wrong, but it is important to let you know, too, when things go right. As I rode around the campus and surrounding area over the weekend, many students were out and about having a good time, but having fun in ways that did not infringe on the rights of others. It was a great weekend to enjoy, celebrate and get refreshed before the last big academic push.

Yes, a few students behaved irresponsibly, and it was their behavior that inevitably drew attention and caused them to be arrested. It is unfortunate that their year has to end with the prospect of facing a judge as well as possible disciplinary action by the University.

We, the public, are influenced by frequent coverage of negative things that occur. We have become conditioned to the notion that the most newsworthy stories are those that are negative or otherwise sensational. We tend to push into the background news like the majority of our students having fun without drinking to excess, throwing up, urinating in public, fighting, vandalizing property or driving under the influence without concern for the safety of themselves or others. However, I believe Purdue's "Silent Majority" stood up and made itself known this past week.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks and congratulations to all the students, faculty, staff and community residents who worked hard to provide a variety of great activities throughout Gala Week. You worked hard to provide alternative activities for everyone. You were creative and inclusive. Your efforts made a difference. It seems that practically everyone made a conscientious effort this past week to celebrate with poise and dignity. The lack of sensational headlines is proof positive and a reminder that sometimes "no news is good news!"
