Children can play safely in fountainsI was shocked to hear that 4-foot fences are being built around Purdue's fountains. I understand that the safety of children is important, however, I do not recall in four years of my education as to ever seeing a child there without their parents! Most parents are there and they are watching over their children as they run through the fountain. I am sure that the original designs for the fountains did not call for fences around them. There are plenty of fountains all around the world that people run through and play in. I am sure that I can find at least 50 other colleges that have fountains as well, how many of them have to build fences? Whoever made the decision to build fences around the fountains is degrading the campus' look and feel. This is not far from graffiti, since you are taking away from the artist's original rendition. Let's ask the person who designed them if the thought of children playing in the fountain ever crossed his mind; I am sure it did! Do the right thing; do not let these fences be built!
