Language has room for interpretation

Many students have expressed frustration with the language barrier that is sometimes present between themselves and their TAs. These students fail to recognize the good things that can come about from language barriers. For instance, the recent conflict with China may have been resolved because of language barriers. Now I get all my international news from the Exponent and, as I understand it, the Chinese government originally made the statement "We have a superior military position." However this was translated to U.S. diplomats as "All your base are belong to us!" This left U.S. officials confused rather than threatened. The conflict finally ended when U.S. officials made the statement "China sucks," which was translated "We apologize for this incident." This is what finally ended the conflict. So the next time you can’t understand what your TA says, remember that ignorance is bliss.
